New Study to measure impact of business events
A new multi-year study by Destination Canada Business Events | Événements d'affaires de Destination Canada will provide the concrete data our industry needs to prove the long-term outcomes of business events.
The study will evaluate the impact of several past conferences in the six key economic sectors that Canada excels in: life sciences, natural resources, finance and insurance, advanced manufacturing, agribusiness and technology.
“We’re delighted to support this important research initiative, which will demonstrate the value of business events and ultimately help attract future events to Canada” said Laura Pallotta, Chair of Meetings Mean Business Canada.

Labor shortages
The Government of Canada announced a new temporary policy that will give recent international graduates with expiring temporary status an opportunity to stay in Canada longer. This is to help ensure that businesses and employers have access to the skilled workers they need to grow and succeed.
Starting in summer 2022, former international students who are in Canada and have a post-graduation work permit expiring between January and December 2022, will qualify for an additional open work permit of up to 18 months.

Industry News in General
While many of us wish we had a crystal ball to see what the future holds for the industry after the last tumultuous two years, IACC has taken a more scholarly approach. Its 2022 Meeting Room of the Future report was created by students from the Hotel Management School Maastricht in the Netherlands using interviews, a survey and desk-based research.
Some highlights:
• Hub-and-spoke format meetings (in-person regional groups connected virtually), which became popular during the pandemic, are likely to continue.
• 84% of executives surveyed stated that they see higher team productivity when their employees are meeting in-person.
• Human interaction was ranked the highest of seven factors when considering attending an in-person meeting, above expanding your network, scheduling and cost of attending.
• Respondents cited teambuilding, training and problem-solving as the main reasons for bringing people together. Status and update meetings are widely regarded as subjects that can be delivered entirely virtually.
• The study pinpointed five factors that meeting bookers will be looking for: more collaboration between meeting participants; high quality of technology; a valuable way of communication; and the venues to recommend new innovative ideas.

Embrace, engage, thrive: The in-person return of the EVENT in Canada
The EVENT debuted in 2018. The goal of the hosts, the MPI Toronto, Ottawa and Montréal/Québec chapters, was to challenge the traditional conference format. Following successful in-person gatherings in 2018 and 2019, the COVID-19 pandemic led to cancellation of the EVENT in 2020 and a virtual iteration in 2021.
But last month, nearly 250 meeting professionals convened at the Pan Pacific Toronto Hotel for the triumphant return of an in-person the EVENT, which featured 35 speakers, attendees from nine of the 10 Canadian provinces (as well as the U.S. and U.K.), 24 sessions, eight clock hours and an opening reception.
