Global Meetings Industry Day (GMID) is first and most importantly an educational event. This MPI initiative has three objectives:
This initiative was initially created here in Canada in 1997 and was observed by a handful of Canadian MPI chapters. Although the MPI Canadian Council at the time implemented a specific date for each chapter to recognize a meetings industry day, recognition was actually taking place in the Canadian chapters across Canada, on or about the same month, just on different days. The MPI Edmonton chapter was one of the chapters that started with the idea of recognizing a specific day because they had approached the mayor’s office for recognition of meeting professionals in Edmonton, and were given a certificate of proclamation from the city of Edmonton for their efforts. Today, all of our Canadian chapters – from Vancouver to Halifax – join together to celebrate this day nationwide. From its humble beginnings, the event has evolved to provide the meetings industry in Canada a unified voice to speak out to the broader business community and the country at large.
