MPI Minute with Mariah Weiler of South Bowl Lounge n Lanes

In a new series for MPI to Eye Blog, we will take a minute to speak with members and supporters of the MPI PHL Chapter.  

This week we talk to: Mariah Weiler, Sales and Events Manager at South Bowl Lounge n Lanes.

What was your first job in the hospitality industry? Why did you choose it? 

When I was young I worked coat check and helped fold linen napkins at my Dad’s catering hall in Northeast Philadelphia. The hall had 4 banquet rooms that were filled with events every weekend. I remember sitting in the kitchen watching the line plate dinners and loving how fast paced everything was and everyone was happy and excited to be there. From that moment on, planning events was always something I loved to do.

What is unique about your venue and why is it ideal for groups or events? 

What makes South Bowl stand out from other venues is the fact that all our private event spaces include private bowling lanes but the aspect that I believe makes us unique is our versatility. Each event we host is different and we love working with with our clients to make the venue exactly how they envision it for their event. South bowl really has it all- it’s a beautiful venue with fantastic food, great staff and bowling!  

I believe our best feature is the loft- it is a beautiful space for an event but it’s also a great space to hang out at the bar or bowl. The loft has 4 lanes, a full bar, Billiard table, more retro arcade games (including NBA Jam!) and a roof top deck. I personally love the deck- it gives you a really cool view of the Walt Whitman Bridge and a part if industrial Philadelphia you don’t always see. Over the summer we host DJ dance parties, yoga classes and Salsa nights. We’re really looking forward to the programming for 2019. 

How do you partner with your clients?

We have a great mix of new and established partnerships through North and South Bowl. The relationships we build with our clients really mean a lot to us- some companies have been hosting their events with us for 10+ years and we really value their business and loyalty. 

What has been your favorite meeting/event? 

It’s so hard to pick a favorite but the one that’s sticking out in my mind is a wedding we did last Summer for Brandon & Chelsea- they were an amazing couple and it was a lot of fun to work with them. They had a plethora of pies for dessert with gold glitter linen on the buffets and a friend dressed as Elvis married them on the upstairs lanes! It was just a really fun party. Another amazing event we host every year is the Philadelphia Futures Get in the Game Fundraiser. Philadelphia Futures is a local non-profit that helps low-income, first-generation-to-college students with the resources needed for admission to college. They partner with the Phillies and host a huge bowling tournament that utilizes the entire venue. The event brings a great energy to the space- everyone is bowling, having fun and raising money for a great cause.
