"COVID Cleanliness: How We Can Tackle Healthy Venues Together"

There are plenty of things meeting planners still need to consider when looking at meeting safety, but it’s COVID-19 that has been at the top of the list most recently. Sometimes it still feels like a minefield: Do we cancel? Do we go virtual? How do we plan a safe hybrid event? If quarantine and isolation has shown us one thing, it’s that we want to be together. In the same room. 

This session discusses how planners can work together with suppliers to help attendees feel as if the meeting space is healthy and hygienic. We'll also see examples of best safety practices from the Raleigh Marriott Crabtree Valley. From air circulation to food safety and many items in between, come get your clean on.

Alan Kleinfeld CMP, LEO is a seasoned and highly-sought after speaker, consultant and educator. With years in meeting management, his expertise runs the gamut from A to Z. However, it is his time as a public safety officer that gives him a unique viewpoint into conference safety and security. A few of his safety topics include COVID-19 and hybrid meetings, emergency operations, workplace safety and crisis communications. He also conducts site analysis for planners and suppliers wanting to have the safest venues for their meetings and events. He’s also a speaker that would enhance your organization’s metrics towards diversity and inclusion. Lastly, he continues to serve as a law enforcement officer.

Trafficking in persons is a serious crime and a grave violation of human rights. Every year, thousands of men, women and children fall into the hands of traffickers, in their own countries and abroad. Almost every country in the world is affected by trafficking, whether as a country of origin, transit or destination for victims. The meetings industry is at the frontline of a battle to combat human trafficking with an increasing number of hospitality brands and organizations pledging to fight sexual and labor exploitation. In this session, we will break down some of the most common misconceptions and identify resources that we can implement NOW to be a part of the fight to prevent and end human trafficking and slavery.

Malinda Harrell, CMP, CASE, is the Director of Sales for the Greater Raleigh Convention and Visitors Bureau. She has been part of the hospitality industry for 25+ years. At the Greater Raleigh CVB, Harrell oversees the sales team tasked with promoting Raleigh/Wake County as a meetings destination, directing strategic selling initiatives and key areas of business development.

 

Harrell is an Industry Veteran and has served on the boards of Association Executives of North Carolina (AENC) and Meeting Professionals International (MPI) – Carolinas Chapter, for which she also served as its first African-American President in 2015. Her current service includes Meeting Professionals International Anti-Human Trafficking task force, Past Presidents Council for the MPI Carolinas Chapter and AENC’s Awards and Scholarships Committee. 

 

Her roots started in the small town of Tarboro, N.C., where the seed was planted to be a good force in the world. She strives to embody her favorite quote; “Be the change you wish to see in the world” – Mahatma Gandhi.

 

To that end, Harrell firmly believes in the value meetings, conventions and tourism overall bring to a destination. From job creation to tax generation, quality of place and broader economic development, she’s a huge advocate for the role tourism can play in shaping and bettering a community. She also believes the hospitality and service industry plays a vital role in providing career opportunities to all people and therefor works tirelessly to help others gain and grow employment within the industry. 

 

She continues to be inspired daily by the hospitality and service industry and is proud to be a part of it.

"Building Resilience in Turbulent Times"

We’ve all faced extraordinary challenges over the last year – many outside of our control. The ability to be resilient in the face of adversity is a vital characteristic of high performing leaders and leads to more successful business outcomes. Developing resilient behaviors does not make the adversity go away; however, it does create an opportunity for collaboration and the development of new ideas and improved processes. In this engaging virtual session, Patrick Nelson will share lessons learned from his experiences leading others in some of the most adverse environments along with providing practical tips centered around leading yourself, cultivating a positive mindset, and leading others. 

• Feel inspired and ignite your engagement in the workplace 
• Identify and apply behaviors that will help you manage your reactions and use a more learned response instead. 
• Develop behaviors that will best help you lead others through adversity – regardless of  your role or position.

Speaker 

Patrick Nelson has gained both local and national accolades for his military service, academic career, and work as a professional speaker and trainer, including being named the inaugural NFL-Tillman Military Scholar. 

He is an experienced leader that spent nearly seven years in the U.S. Army as a paratrooper and completed three combat deployments leading soldiers. His military awards include the Bronze Star Medal and the Purple Heart Medal.

Off the proverbial leadership field, he serves his community by actively volunteering with Tee It Up for the Troops, a non-profit organization that raises money for wounded veterans.

Patrick studied at Minnesota State University and received a bachelor’s degree graduating Magna Cum Laude. He also has a master’s degree in Sport Management from Minnesota State and a Masters in Organization Development from Pepperdine University.

"These Laws Are A Changing"

Current events mandate changes to laws and encompass all areas of risk management, contracts, liability, and so much more. What will the status of the industry be six months or a year from now? No one really knows but it is essential to keep watch on continually changing positions force majeure, cancelations, risk, and similar issues.

Jonathan Howe is President and a Senior and Founding Partner of Howe & Hutton, Ltd. He is recognized as one of the true leaders of the not-for-profit organization bar as well as the hospitality and meetings, travel, incentive, hotel, and trade show industries, and for trial and appellate advocacy. Jon is also General Counsel to Meeting Professionals International, the U.S. Chamber of Commerce Association Committee of 100, The Sports & Fitness Industry Association and International Special Events Society, to name just a few. He is the special advisor to the American Bar Association Standing Committee on Meetings and Travel. He was named the inaugural recipient of the Hospitality Industry Attorneys of the Year by the Academy of Hospitality Industry Attorneys. For 21 years he served as a public elected official. As an adjunct professor he has taught courses in association management and hospitality industry law at Roosevelt and DePaul Universities. The Chicago Tribune named him "Mr. Association Lawyer of the U.S." Jon received his Bachelor of Arts degree with honors from Northwestern University and his Juris Doctorate from Duke University where he was first in his graduating class. He is a life member of the Board of Visitors for Duke University School of Law. He was the founding chairman of the Chicago Bar Association Trade and Professional Association Law Committee; is a past vice chairman of the American Society of Association Executives Legal Committee and a founder and past chair of its Legal Section. He is admitted to practice before numerous federal district and appellate courts and is one of few lawyers to have appeared and argued before the United States Supreme Court.

MaryAnne Bobrow, CAE, CMP, CMM has more than 20 years of experience in association and meetings management. She is an active member of and volunteers for multiple industry associations, including ASAE, CalSAE, MPI, and AMCI. She has served in multiple leadership roles including MPI Chapter Advisory Council Chair, MPI SSN President, MPI Independent and Small Business Advisory Board, MPI Anti-Human Trafficking Committee, ASAE Ethics Committee, and is the former Chair of the EIC’s APEX Standards Council (now Industry Insights) to name a few. She is an approved facilitator for the chapter leadership program, has authored chapters for CIC Manual, 9th Edition, IAEE’s Art of the Show, 3rd and 4th Editions, and PCMA’s Professional Meeting Management, 5th and 6th Editions, and writes articles for and/or records webinars for industry organizations and magazines, including Meetings Today. She is a frequent presenter at industry events, with focus on business acumen and trends, risk management, financial proficiencies, attendee safety and security, human trafficking awareness, and disruption innovation for meetings and organizations.
