July Education Recap - Safe & Secure

MPI-NCharleston2019-47

By: Maureen Donovan | Jul 22, 2019

Any number of scenarios can put meeting planners and their attendees in danger, from wildfires and mass shootings to power outages and even a power cord that has not been
taped down. Alan Kleinfeld, CMP, trained by the Department of Homeland Security and an expert on event safety and security shared with more than 75 meeting professionals in attendance several key areas on which to focus.

It can be overwhelming as we think of the things that can go wrong and it is that fear of the unknown that sometimes prevents us from taking everyday precautions regarding
the safety and security of our surroundings. Examples were brought up, such as private security for high profile individuals to obligations of venues to provide written Active Shooter Plans. Members of the audience were quick to share personal experiences involving safety issues. (I wonder who is going to guard that Judge?)

Get your checklist started: medical emergency, fire, food allergies, airborne disease, active shooter, weather event, crowd control, lighting, drone usage and so much more. (Who knew drones were an issue?)

Thank you, Alan, for the great list of resources (posted on our MPI-CC Facebook page).

And, because everyone asks…

Active Shooter Response: RUN, HIDE, FIGHT (call 911 only when it is safe to do so)
