MPI Minnesota Chapter profiles Shelby Neumann, Event Assistant for Wendy Porter Events.
Why did you join MPI?
I recently joined MPI to meet planners around the area and learn more about the industry! I want to gain tips and ideas from experienced planners that I can hopefully one day implement into my own events.
How long have you been in the meetings/hospitality industry?
I graduated from Winona State University a few weeks ago so I am brand new to
the industry. I interned for Wendy Porter Events last summer and am currently
working for her part time while I continue to look for full time employment.
How did you decide to get involved in this business? What influenced you?
Being extremely organized and a planner in my own personal life, it made me
realize that I should make a career out of it. Some people that influenced me
were Wendy Porter, Jennifer Merkl and Nicole Schossow.
What’s the most valuable advice you’ve received about working with meetings?
Expect the unexpected and have back up plans. You never know what can happen
during the event so you must have back up options and be quick on your feet to
keep the event up and running.
What is one piece of advice about meeting planning you would share?
According to Bizzabo Blog, to help with productivity, one should understand
your objectives and goals and know which ones to focus on. Also, use the
resources out there to help you. You should leverage planning guides,
templates and event software to aid in your planning.
What is one thing about this industry that you love?
I love that every event is different and unique to the client. I like how fast paced
the industry is. There’s always something to do or change, which keeps you on
your toes.
What is one thing about the industry would you like to see changed?
After reading Christy Lamagna’s book “The Strategic Planning Guide for Event Professionals”, I agree that planners need to approach events strategically and not just with a logistics-based planning model. Strategic planning can greatly transform events and have a positive impact for companies and individuals.
What do you do outside of work?
I am a big reader – you can always find me with a book in my hand! I am also very active. I like to work out and attend yoga classes. I love to spend time with my family and friends!
