MPI Minnesota profiles Planner Andrea Ostergaard, Program Manager for Rail~Volution: Building Livable Communities with Transit.
Why did you join MPI?
I had been thinking about it for a while. I organize a national conference for people in public transit and land use development. I wasn’t always a planner and sort of worked into the role. I realized that I spent all my time creating networking and learning opportunities for those in that industry and didn’t have a network of my own. I joined to learn, network and become a better planner so I can give my industry who is doing incredible work the best opportunities.
How long have you been in the meetings/hospitality industry?
I have been in the meeting industry for 7 years.
How did you decide to get involved in this business? What influenced you?
I have always had a knack for details and throwing parties. My background is in city planning (so I have the planning part) and nonprofit management. I started by throwing fundraising events, galas and eventually a large street festival. Then I found a job that married the city planner in me with the event planner and moved into conference management. I love the set up and the creativity and problem-solving that goes into producing an event.
What’s the most valuable advice you’ve received about working with meetings?
The event is coming whether you’re ready or not – so plan ahead.
What is one piece of advice about meeting planning you would share?
There will be a number of things you can’t plan for but if you focus on fool-proofing the details, you’ll be more ready to deal with the inevitable issues that will arise. And pick trustworthy venders. Relationships are everything.
What is one thing about this industry that you love?
I love problem solving space and needs of a client/partner and providing an event that changes how people work. I love having an impact.
What is one thing about the industry would you like to see changed?
I would love to see people not think they “still have time” to do things when they can just do them now. Working last minute is only a huge cause for stress and often can be avoided. I would like to see more of an intentional effort around wellness, especially around food and beverage. Simple cost-effective changes, and substitutions to a continental breakfast can really have a big effect on a participant’s day and ability to learn!
What do you do outside of work?
I love to spend time with my husband, son and soon my daughter on the way. I love to garden, go 4-wheeling and hiking, and enjoy a good meal paired with a nice wine!
