About this Session:
This installment of MPI Georgia’s Leadership Webinar features chef and business owner, Sarah Simmons. She has a great story to share about how she pursued her passion and how she leaned into her leadership skills along the way. She and her husband, Chef Aaron Hoskins, are leading by example in the restaurant industry with their commitment to paying livable wages and to their hiring practices.
About our Presenter:
Named one of the 50 best chefs in New York City in 2014, by FOOD & WINE magazine, Sarah Simmons is the CEO of CITY GRIT Hospitality Group, the founder of the CITY GRIT brand and Executive Chef/Owner of smallSUGAR, il Focolare Pizzeria, CITY GRIT Market, CITY GRIT Catering, and Feed the City, a 501c3 dedicated to breaking young adults from the poverty cycle.
Sarah’s full-service concept, Birds & Bubbles, opened in New York in 2014 earning her numerous accolades including three stars from Time Out NY. In 2015 she opened Rise Gourmet Goods & Bakeshop,
her first counter-service concept in her hometown of Columbia, SC, earning “Best New Restaurant” by the readers of The Free Times Newspaper.
In 2017, Simmons relocated full-time to Columbia, SC after losing both Birds & Bubbles and Rise to separate real estate development deals. She rebuilt the company with a new purpose - ending the poverty cycle. The CGHG mission is to build a sustainable business model providing fair and equitable wages, leadership development, workforce training, and community service in the city where she serves on the city’s Food Policy Council.
While the restaurants were closed during the pandemic, Simmons led the restaurants’ leadership team to revamp Feed the City’s workforce development strategy to focus on confidence building, soft skills, leadership development, and community feeding. Feed the City will roll out this strategy to a new class of cohorts in the summer of 2022.
