The CMP Study Group Information Session lasts approximately 90 minutes and is essential for all candidates who wish to join the upcoming Fall 2023 Study Group. This will be followed by the Start-Up Session on September 12, 2023, provided at least four committed and qualified candidates attend the Information Session. At the CMP Study Group Start-Up Session all candidates who are joining the Spring Study Group will determine the specifics for their study sessions.
Attendance at both sessions is highly recommended but note that attendance at one or the other is mandatory for anyone who wishes to join the Spring 2023 Study Group. Candidates who do not attend at least one session (either the Information Session or the Study Group Start-Up Session) will not be able to join this Study Group.
Before attending the Information Session, please review the application guidelines to be sure you meet the requirements to proceed. Full information regarding applications and requirements can be found at the Events Industry Council (EIC) website.
Due to the virtual format for the Information Session we will be unable to facilitate one-on-one discussions or review individual applications. If you have specific questions about your application, please contact one of the committee chairs directly. You must RSVP in advance by sending an email to Gregg or Connie (email addresses below). The CMP Information Session will not be recorded and will not be available on demand.

What motivated you to pursue the CMP designation? What motivated me to pursue my CMP designation is that I knew I wanted to have some more credibility to my work experience in the industry. I then decided that the CMP designation was the one that I thought offered the most opportunity to help in advancing my career opportunities and knowledge.
How did participation in the CMP Study Group support your studying to take the exam? I don’t think I would have stayed focused to get my CMP as quickly as I did if it had not been for the study group. It offered me a balanced way of tackling the material each week and opportunities to review and understand it with others going through the same experience. I am so grateful for the study groups pace for preparing for the CMP and completing it in a time frame I didn’t think was possible.
How did you feel when you saw the words "You Passed" ? I was super excited & ready to celebrate once I saw the words on the screen that said I had passed. I had worked hard to obtain this CMP designation and my hard work paid off.
What benefits have you experienced as a result of having your CMP? The benefits of having my CMP have included lots of new job opportunities and congrats from others with the CMP designation. It has also provided me with that creditability to show I have not only the work experience but the knowledge as well to help planners create a successful meeting.
Do you find information you learned while studying to take the exam helpful in your position at the hotel? The information while I was studying for the exam was helpful in my hotel position because it gave me a different lens at looking at how a planner looks at a meeting. I now have a better understanding of why a planner asks the questions they ask when preparing for a large or small meeting. I can anticipate their questions and provide detailed information to them before they even ask for it which I feel makes me a better partner.
Are you able to share some of the formulas, etc., with your clients to help their meetings go well? I do quickly recognize clients who do not understand putting a meeting together and it may even be the first time they have ever planned a meeting, so I take the time to make sure they are going to be successful by asking them a lot of questions on the planning process. The questions I ask are ones I have formulated by the material I learned studying for my CMP. As a result of asking these questions they clearly understand that I have a lot of knowledge and consider me a resource in helping them achieve their work.
Given the time since you achieved the CMP designation, was it a good use of your time and resources to take that step? Now that I have achieved my CMP designation, I feel more confident on taking the next steps in getting my Masters in Hospitality.
This will be a virtual session.
