*How did you get involved in the Audio/Visual industry?
I started my event career on what many consider an unconventional path, from dreaming to become a scientist who could help people live better lives, to studying engineering, which by recommendation of one of my professors, led me to a two-year career as an electronics professor. In between those jobs, I always found time to fit into my schedule my longtime passion of performing as a DJ, having a weekly show on the radio, events and clubs. Within a few years, I decided to leave my engineering career to start a concert event lighting company, which has evolved into what is today Innov8 Events, a full-service event production and experience design firm. I never thought I would end up consulting, designing and planning events for some of the world’s largest brands and associations. By taking a leap of faith and following my passion, I found my calling: designing multi-sensory experiences that do make a difference. In the end, I did get to live my childhood dream of helping people enjoy their lives.
*What do you consider your biggest business success?
My biggest business success has definitely been being able to successfully expand the business into various markets. We started the business in Puerto Rico in 1989, and after growing the company into the largest production company on the island, we decided to venture into the mainland, and in 2004 we expanded to the state of Florida. In 2019 I realized that our work took us all over the nation and needed to be in a location that would allow us to reach a larger corporate market. This led us to the expansion into Atlanta.
*What has been your biggest business challenge and how did you conquer that?
I’ve have always looked at challenges as an opportunity to grow. Working in the corporate events industry, I have been through two major challenging moments. The first one was in 2009 due to the global financial crisis, during which most of our clients scaled down or canceled their events. The second one was during the global pandemic in 2020. Having expanded into the Georgia market just a few months before, this was a very difficult transition for us. We all know how devastating it was for our events industry, where many companies were not able to stay in business. I am grateful that this opportunity allowed me to focus on learning more about the science behind human behavior. Having Emotional Event Design Skills allows me to provide my clients with better immersive experiences.
*How did you get involved with MPI Georgia?
Being involved in industry associations is a way for me to give back, and help the future generations of event leaders. My journey with MPI started back in 2011 while living in South Florida. When I moved to Georgia it was a no-brainer that I had to join MPI Georgia. This year, the opportunity to be the Annual AV sponsor of the Georgia Chapter was presented to me, so we committed to helping improve the experiences of our members.
*What do you enjoy doing outside of business (i.e. favorite hobbies)?
I’ve been blessed to be surrounded by the women in my life: my wife, my two daughters and three granddaughters. When I’m not at work, I love watching a good movie, traveling, or simply practicing my DJ skills, but my favorite pastime is to spend time surrounded by family.
*Top three life lessons?
1. The desire to learn is the fuel that ignites the brain.
2. Enjoy every moment with your loved ones, and tell them how much they mean to you. You never know when it might be too late to do so.
3. Treat everyone with kindness and respect… It feels so good.
