CMP SPOTLIGHT – You Must Renew Every 5 Years

December 2024

Connie Bergeron, CMP Fellow, President, Site Selection Solutions, Inc.

Important reminder for everyone who has earned their Certified Meeting Professional (CMP) designation:  You must renew your certification every 5 years.   Your MPI Georgia Chapter CMP Study Group Committee sends reminder emails to everyone for whom we can find an email address to ensure current CMPs are aware of the deadline to recertify, however it is each CMPs responsibility to update their profile contact details both with MPI and with the Events Industry Council.

The Events Industry Council (EIC) states, “If a CMP misses a recertification deadline, they are no longer certified and are not able to use the CMP marks or digital badge. Expired CMPs have one year to reinstate their certifications without retaking the CMP exam. After that reinstatement window ends, you must go through the application and exam process from the beginning.”

**Please Note: While the reinstatement deadline is extended by 12 months, from 31 December of the year that it is currently due, the deadline for completion of the required 25 – or 15 (see below) clock hours of meeting management education is not extended.  For example, CMPs scheduled to recertify by 31 December 2024 now have until 11:59 PM EST on 31 December 2025 to reinstate their CMP without retaking the exam, but their clock hours of education must have been completed by (in this example) 31 December 2024.  See fees schedule below.

If you are working on your CMP renewal for 2024, on the Events Industry Council’s website, the following information is posted: The EIC Office is closed  22 December thru 27 December & 30 December through 3 January in observance of the holiday season. Those who need to apply for recertification or lapsed recertification must pay and submit their application prior to the 31 December deadline by 23:59 EST.

Given the new EIC website platform, we highly encourage you to log into your account in advance of their Holiday closing schedule should you have trouble accessing your account and need assistance.

CMPs may renew their certification anytime during their recertification year.  Fees are lower the earlier a renewal submission is filed electronically with the EIC.  The fees below apply to the 2024 year.  The 2025 fees are not yet posted.

All fees must be submitted in U.S. Dollars. Visa, Master Card, American Express, Check’s, Cashier Checks and International Bank Transfers accepted in U.S. dollars.
Checks are payable to Events Industry Council. A $25 USD service charge will be assessed for declined or returned payments and added to the total fees due. Charges from returned check fees must be paid by money order or certified check.  All CMP recertification fees are non-refundable and non-transferrable.

RECERTIFICATION REQUIREMENTS INCLUDE:

  • Work experience with hands-on responsibility for meeting outcomes
  • A specific number of clock hours of meeting management education
  • Payment of the recertification fee.

***For MPI members, please note that each year of your MPI membership counts as an “Industry Contribution.”  If you have been a member for 3 of the 5 years, you may list each year of membership separately and obtain a confirming note from Meeting Professionals International as your proof of membership dates.  If you have 3 Industry Contributions, the number of clock hours of education required to renew your CMP reduces from 25 to 15.
