Amy Hokkanen Independent Meeting Planner Amy's Star Meetings Members since 2011 |
MPI Georgia connection? I had always heard about MPI. In the past I reviewed job postings on the website and attended a few MPI Georgia events. In 2011 I had the good fortune to be hired as the MPI Georgia Association Manager. I was so excited to dive in working with my industry peers in the meeting profession. The years working as an association manager were invaluable. In 2015 I left that position and decided to pursue being an independent meeting planner. I immediately knew that MPI Georgia would be an important part of my development and haven’t gone a year without being an involved member, not only being a volunteer, but loving the role as Co-Chair on two committees.
How did you get into the hospitality industry? After graduating from The University of Georgia (GO DAWGS!) I wasn’t sure what I wanted to do with my career. I had several family/friends mention that I had the right personality for the hospitality industry. So, I dove in and got a job with Marriott in the Conference Center division in Atlanta. I worked at three properties moving my way up to a Conference Service Manager (CSM) before I left the supplier side of the industry to try my hand on the planner side. I truly value my career start with Marriott as I was able to learn the industry basics and those skills still help me every day in my current work with my clients.
What's one of your most unique personal or work accomplishments during your time at home this year? Making the move to become an independent meeting planner was a huge decision to make but I am so glad that I made the jump. It took a lot of hard work and determination but I am in such a happy place! I enjoy the different clients/jobs that I take on and every day is exciting and different!
