Abby Freeman Managing Director| Mitchell Meetings |
*What inspired you to get involved with MPI Georgia, and what has your journey on the Board been like so far?
I joined MPI in 2004 (20 years, can that be right?!) to help me earn my CMP. I took on co-chairing what was then called eConnect (MPI Georgia's online newsletter), and I have been honored to take on a variety of leadership roles ever since. I served in a variety of board roles, from Director of Education to VP of Communications plus a few more gigs, eventually becoming President. I couldn't resist re-joining the board this year as VP of Strategic Events, giving me the chance to use my MPI brain in another way.
*How has your experience with MPI Georgia influenced your professional growth and perspective on the meeting and events industry?
How has it not influenced my growth would be a better question for me. MPI has given me a professional confidence I would never have had without it. The tangible and intangible leadership skills I gained in my committee and board service has completely changed the trajectory of my career. Not to even mention the business contacts and opportunities it has awarded me.
*What has been the most rewarding aspect of your role as a Board member, and how has it impacted your approach to leadership?
Without a doubt, mentoring new leaders has been the most rewarding aspect of my board service this time around. Walking that fine line between managing and leading is a tricky one, and I work hard to balance it and be an example for other MPI leaders. Finding other leaders where they are and reminding them of their strengths and abilities makes my MPI heart full, and I can only hope that it helps others as it helps me
*What do you see as the biggest opportunity or priority for MPI Georgia in the coming year?
Helping our members find a balance in the craziness that our industry has become post-pandemic. We are all over-worked and stressed in a way that we have never experienced before. Can MPI help us to find breathing room and recalibrate our priorities? I sure hope so.
*Which MPI Georgia event are you most proud to have been a part of, and why?
Can I pick two? The first is not an event, but I am beyond proud to have served as the MPI Georgia president when Covid hit and to have walked us through that time - professionally the hardest thing I have ever done. I tried to lead with empathy and heart, and I'm still overwhelmed when thinking about how our board and members responded to the time. My second is having the opportunity to spearhead this year's first MPI Georgia Volunteer and Sponsor Appreciation Brunch. Having the chance to celebrate and thank our volunteers and sponsors is what it is all about for me.
*What advice would you give to new members or those considering taking on a leadership role within MPI Georgia? My advice is to just do it and get involved! Those who have known me for a long time or who have worked with me know that I am not just a joiner. When I decide to join an organization, I am always quick to hop on a committee or step up to a leadership or board role. I think this is so important to get the most out of your membership and to truly get engaged and accountable. And, if you have been a member for a long time, still stay involved (hence the three-time board service!) We have many choices of industry groups to consider, so if you are going to spend money and time to join, be sure to get involved quickly. The ROI both personally and professionally is invaluable!
