From Surviving to Thriving: Managing Stress and Avoiding Burnout
Working in the ‘Event Industry” continues to land in the top five - on the top 10 list - of the most stressful careers you can choose year after year. You get it, you choose to go into this exciting industry and you accept stress as part of the package. Many who work in this industry thrive on deadlines, the short turnarounds, and the excitement of ‘pulling it off’ for beloved clients and colleagues.
Today’s demand on the meetings industry far exceeds the capacity of those who work in it. Given that the demand is not expected to decrease any time soon, one’s ability to manage stress and set some boundaries around their own self-care must increase in order to prevent burning out.
By definition, burnout is a state of emotional, physical, and mental exhaustion caused by excessive and prolonged stress. It occurs when you feel overwhelmed, emotionally drained, and are unable to meet constant demands – a daily feeling for many. And while the World Health (WHO) Organization formally recognized burnout in 2019 as caused by “chronic workplace stress that is not properly managed”, they did not have Covid, WFH or Hybrid work environments on the radar.
Hitting burnout can be painful, life changing, and expensive. Every effort should be made to avoid it. Hear from a 25+ year meetings executive who left the industry after her own experience with burnout. She will share her story, what to look for, what it looks like if you do nothing about it, and immediate (and simple!) ways you can protect yourself from falling into the burnout rut.
Session Learning Outcomes:
1. Participants will gain a clear understanding of the difference between - and progression from - stress to burnt out, what to look for both in themselves and their colleagues and what actionable steps they can take to process stress, including what drains their energy and what gives them energy.
2. Participants will learn the importance of having, and how to set, boundaries along with the role of self-care in keeping stress levels manageable, and the difference & impact between burnout prevention and recovery.
3. Lastly, participants will learn about their own self-sabotaging behaviors that result in much of the stress and anxiety experienced on a daily basis along with the impact reigning in these behaviors will have in lowering stress levels, enhancing relationships with colleagues and loved ones, improving one’s ability to manage difficult conversations, and, ultimately, increasing one’s ability to perform at their peak without burning the candle at both ends.
All registrants should take the Discover Your Saboteurs and Mental Fitness Level (PQ) assessments before arriving at the event.
Both can be taken from your smart phone or computer and each takes less than three minutes to complete. Please bring your results with you to the event!
