CUTTING EDGE LEGAL ISSUES FOR MEETINGS –
NEW CHALLENGES, UPDATED SOLUTIONS

Joshua Grimes, Esq.

AirBnb; Uber; Political turmoil; Immigration restrictions; Legal Weed; Terrorism; Guns in Meetings -- Continuing change around the world means changes for meetings. The “Sharing Economy” featuring AirBnb and Uber creates havoc for hotel room blocks and transportation providers. Controversy in Washington raises worries about protest and disruptions, discourages international attendees from traveling, and may affect food and labor costs. And societal changes like legal marijuana and increased acceptance of guns in public places affects a meeting host’s potential liability.

More change is certain in the months and years ahead, but without a Crystal Ball it’s tough to plan for it. Yet solid planning is what successful planners and suppliers must do.

This interactive and thought-provoking session will identify the most recent and critical developments to impact meetings in 2017. Mr. Grimes and session participants will consider trends likely to affect future meetings, and then develop creative and innovative legal responses to allow events to go forward successfully with minimal risk. This review includes discussion of contract clauses tailored to address each situation.

Topics to be addressed include:

  • Contract provisions to adapt to constantly changing hotel rates in the meetings market.

  • Impact of Brexit on meetings in Britain and elsewhere in Europe.

  • Washinton’s impact on the climate for meetings, both in the US and abroad.

  • Planning for “bathroom bills”, discriminatory laws, and other social and political controversies that affect preferred meeting locations.

  • Reacting to global terrorism, health, and other concerns that cannot often be anticipated.

  • The sharing economy’s impact on traditional room blocks.

Session attendees should come ready to think about their most important legal issues today, and to brainstorm with colleagues about the best solutions.

Join us on April 9, 2018 at the Hartford/Windsor Marriott Airport Hotel in Windsor, CT.
